About the GED

About the GED

The GED® test is made up of 4 subjects, broken into separate exams. You don’t have to take all 4 tests at once - you can space them out however it suits you and go at your own pace. Here is an overview of what is on the GED, by subject area:

PRICING

As of June 1, 2023, the price of the GED test is $35.00 per subject, in-person at a test center, or $41.00 per subject, online from home.

Starting July 1, 2023, California charges $41.00 per subject for the GED test, in-person at a test center.
 
 

RETAKES

For those testing in-person at a testing center:  
  • In California, there is no waiting period for your first two retakes. After taking a test subject 3 times, you will have to wait 60 days before retesting.
  • You currently receive 2 discounted retakes for every GED® test subject purchased but don’t pass. You have 365 days after your full price test to use these retakes.
  • Starting July 1, 2023: You will receive one discounted* retake for every GED® test subject you purchase but don’t pass. You have 365 days after your full price test to use this retake. This retake offer (1 full price:1 discount) repeats until you pass the test. GED Testing Service waives its $26.00 testing fee, however additional testing fees may still apply in your state.
  • *In California, there is a $15.00 test center fee for GED® test retakes. 
 
For those testing on the Online Exam: 
  • The Online Proctored Exam allows for one retake before a 60-day waiting period. After taking a test subject 2 times online, you’ll have to wait 60 days before retesting.
  • The Online Proctored Exam costs $41.00 for a retake in California. Discounted retakes are not offered on the Online Proctored Exam. 
 
 

SCORING

Test takers must score at least 145 on each subject to pass the GED test. Scoring higher can have additional benefits.

GED Passing Score

The GED® test has a passing score of 145 for each test subject. To earn your high school equivalency, you’ll need to score 145 or higher on all four subjects.
 
GED College Ready

165 - 174

 
Scoring above 165 (on any test subject) means you have demonstrated you are ready to take college level courses and you may qualify for waivers from placement testing or developmental education requirements if you enroll in college.
 
GED College Ready + Credit

175 - 200

 
Scoring above 175 (on any test subject) means you have demonstrated skills that could qualify for up to 10 college credit hours.
